Interact Marketing Joins Industry Leaders in SOPA Internet Censorship Protest

Interact Marketing will be among the companies including Wikipedia and Google on January 18th publicly displaying protest of the proposed SOPA and PIPA acts on their website.

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA) are currently sitting in Congress. SOPA was proposed to hinder the practices of copyright infringement, however, most web experts are warning that the passing of this act could harm the functionality of the Internet has a whole. The Huffington Post reported details of SOPA on December 14th stating, “SOPA would imbue the federal government with broad powers to shut down whole web domains on the basis that it believes them to be associated with piracy — without a trial or even a traditional hearing. It would provide Hollywood with powerful new legal tools to stifle transactions with websites whose existence worries the movie industry.”

PIPA is the second Internet censorship act currently being voted on in Congress. REDDIT.com got the ball rolling for the website blackout’s and today, their messaging states, “Today, for 12 hours, reddit.com goes dark to raise awareness of two bills in congress: H.R.3261 “Stop Online Piracy Act” and S.968 “PROTECT IP,” which could radically change the landscape of the Internet. These bills provide overly broad mechanisms for enforcement of copyright which would restrict innovation and threaten the existence of websites with user-submitted content, such as REDDIT. Please take today as a day of focus and action to learn about these destructive bills and do what you can to prevent them from becoming reality.”

Today, Internet search engine giant, Google, is sporting a black censor bar across their logo in protest of the proposed Internet censorship acts that are scheduled to be presented to the Senate on January 24th. Interact Marketing is following suit and urges citizens to contact their local representative to voice their concerns about SOPA and PIPA.

“The issue came up several times in our daily staff meetings, and this morning we decided to join the cause by a unanimous decision of management and staff. The implications of these acts can be far reaching and detrimental to free communication and trade on the web. We, like millions of other Americans, are concerned and have chosen to voice our disapproval publicly today.” said Joe Beccalori, Founder and President of Interact Marketing.
